Description: The Western Front: Christmas 1914. Out of the violence of World War I, a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.” Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, and peace. An a cappella chorale, All Is Calm is a remarkable true story in the words and songs of the men who lived it. More information.

Dialect Sides

Standard British

The German leaders accepted the Holy Father's appeal for a cease-fire at once, but the leaders of the Allied Forces did not. The Pope's request for the signing of a Christmas truce was arrogantly rejected.

Scottish

I think it was the excitement more than anything that made me join up. I lived in the country and there were not many boys my age, so I thought it would be nice to be with a lot of lads on something of a picnic, because we all thought the war would be over by Christmas.

Italian

In the name of the Divinity, I beseech thee to cease the clang of arms while Christendom celebrates the Feast of the World's Redemption.

French

Midnight. We arrive in a single file, all quiet in line. The Germans opposite are singing, the Christmas carol is cut up by rifle fire. Poor little God of Love, born in this night, how could you ever have loved mankind?

German

We don't want to kill you, and you don't want to kill us. So why shoot? You are Anglo-Saxons; we are Saxons. We not want to fight you.
