About Us

Southeast Alabama Community Theatre (SEACT) has a mission to enrich the cultural lives of Wiregrass residents through the presentation of high quality theatre, to provide creative opportunities to talented individuals to perform on stage and behind the scenes, and to introduce the theatrical experience to school-aged children. SEACT is a 501(c) organization and depends on the support of its community to bring theatre to life in the Wiregrass. The organization is funded through season tickets, sponsorships, advertising, and donations.

Volunteer

No experience? No problem! SEACT needs actors, directors, producers, stage managers, technical assistance, costume experts... you get the idea. It takes an army to put on a show, big or small. Contact us to let us know about your interest, and we will do our best to introduce you to a show crew where you can be involved. All beginner positions are volunteer.

Auditions

Can anyone audition for a SEACT show? Yes! A frequent question is, “What are the directors looking for?” Directors and producers consider a number of factors when casting a show. Most of the following apply, in no particular order.

1. Ability and “fit” for the particular role is important (age, sex, height). However, these things are considered within the context of the rest of this list. SEACT encourages colorblind casting to the extent that publishers allow for a licensed work.

2. Can I see and hear the actor? Actors on stage must understand that a raised eyebrow isn’t a raised eyebrow unless the back row can see it. A whisper isn’t a whisper unless the back row can hear it. Projection of action and sound is critical.

3. Will this actor be committed to the rehearsal and show schedule? Conflicts may be listed on your audition form, and they may affect casting. Unexcused absences jeopardize a production. You can and will be replaced, if necessary.

4. Will this actor represent SEACT in a professional way, serving as a role model and volunteering for other aspects of the production such as painting a set or pulling costumes?

Venues

SEACT is a tenant of the Cultural Arts Center, and does not own a performance facility. SEACT productions are performed at two locations for reserved-seating events.

The Cultural Arts Center is home to the SEACT offices, and our organization leases additional space for shop work, costumes and props. The auditorium seats 300 with approximately 90 chairs on the floor in front of the stage

and 200 chairs on stadium-style risers with two rows of seating per riser. The SEACT office handles Patron seat reservations and public ticket sales.

The Dothan Opera House is located on North St. Andrews Street in downtown Dothan, and features a 589-seat house with two balconies. It is always our pleasure to work with the City of Dothan in utilizing this beautiful, historic venue. Part of the contract requirement for this venue includes mandatory use of the City of Dothan Box Office and technical crew.

Both facilities are ADA accessible.
