What is SEACT Studio? SEACT Studio productions emphasize performance and process, giving directors and actors the opportunity to explore their craft over a shortened rehearsal period. Staged in an intimate black box setting with minimal technical elements, these productions offer a unique theatrical experience for participants and audience members alike.
Description: Under the guidance of their beloved mother, the four young March sisters -- tempestuous Jo, motherly Meg, shy Beth, and spoiled baby Amy -- struggle to keep their family going while Father's away in the Civil War. In this beautifully dramatized adaptation of the classic novel, even as privation, illness, and sibling rivalry cast their shadows, each girl strives to find her true self. One-Act play adaptation by Marisha Chamberlain. More information.
Audition Style: Auditions will take place in a warm and supportive group setting. Actors will read sides from the play. Audition sides are available here.
The cast list will be posted within 48 hours of the final audition at SEACT.com and on SEACT's social media pages. A time will be set for you to pick up your script before Christmas break, and the first rehearsal will take place on January 5 at 6:30 PM at the Cultural Arts Center.
Rehearsals typically take place Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30-9:00 and Sundays from 2:00-5:00. Additional rehearsals might be added closer to show week that cannot be missed.
All conflicts between January 5 and January 23 must be provided at registration. Adding additional conflicts after casting is grounds for reduced stage time or dismissal from the production. Conflicts do not mean you will not be cast, but they might affect how you are cast.
Actors of all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply!
Open to actors ages 13+. Parent/legal guardian must provide consent for any participant under the age of 19.
Character Breakdown
-
Jo - Does not feel comfortable with the parameters of her gender. Extremely ambitious and frustrated by the distance between where she is and where she wants to be. Impatient. Boyish and rough-and-tumble. Can be quite awkward or abrupt; has a bad temper when riled. Passionate. Ahead of her time.
-
Meg - Acts as Marmee’s second in the house. A romantic at heart–likes to dress up and have little luxuries in life. Hates being poor.
-
Amy - Opinionated and spunky; popular and quite focused on style. Perhaps a bit spoiled. A perfect little lady- except for her temper.Grows up to be quite beautiful and elegant. Madly in love with Laurie, around whom she is never cool.
-
Beth - Very sweet and paralytically shy; social anxieties. Loves deeply and has deep empathy for everyone. Loves the simple things in life. Observant. Quick to forgive.
-
Hannah - The March’s longtime housekeeper, cook, and de facto babysitter. A treasure; intimidating; a traditionalist. Part of the family.
-
Marmee - The strong and faithful matriarch of the March family. Intelligent and warm, generous and kind, and necessarily practical. Good sense of humor and strong leadership qualities. Protective and nurturing, but also trusting and empowering towards those she loves (which is… everyone).
-
Aunt March - The most unpleasant old woman. Has lots of money and privilege, along with judgmental political and personal opinions.
-
Father - Fighting in the War. Comes home briefly for Christmas.
-
Old Mr. Laurence - Laurie’s grandfather, responsible for Laurie’s upbringing. A very wealthy man. Has a rigid sense of what is appropriate behavior, especially for a man. Probably quite unintentionally frightening.
-
Laurie - A sweet and handsome young man. Same age as Jo. Humourous, charming, and caring. A natural musician. Wealthy thanks to his inheritance; and generous. Does not always fit comfortably within the parameters of his given gender role- he doesn’t want to group up to be a soldier
or take over his grandfather’s business. Finds a family in the Marches. In love with Jo. -
Mr. Brooke - Laurie’s sometimes stiff and awkward tutor. A poor man. Intelligent. Feels deeply. Madly in love with Meg.
